When we started almost two years ago, it was only me: Amber. At that time I had just begun to crochet and was eager to share my talents with the world.
Okay, it was more like I knew how to crochet in a straight line and as a result had a surplus of crochet headbands. That was a slow four months and I didn't sell anything.
My start came after finals week in December 2009. It was December 8th at around 8:30pm. You might be wondering how I can be so accurate as to when this all started?
I was at a Christmas dinner put on by my church with my mom on that night. I had taken a final that day and didn't have one until Thursday, so I had taken the night off from cramming and ended up at that dinner. One of our neighbors was going to play indoor soccer later that night and invited me to come along. I thought it was a good idea. I would take the rest of the night off from studying and enjoy myself.
I went to the game and was having a good time. I had played soccer growing up and enjoyed being back on the field. Growing up I played goalie, so that night I found myself back in the net. And was surprised at how easily it all came back to me. I wasn't ready to take the field in a professional match, but I was keeping up and making saves. That is until the second half. Years of drills and instinct began to take over, and I came out to cut a forward off. I went down to take the ball away from the player. Well, most of me went down. My right foot remained stuck to the AstroTurf.
I don't remember hearing the snap as much as feeling it. And let me tell you it was bad. Both my lower leg bones and one ankle bone were broken. I was laid up for 8 weeks.
Sitting around for 8 weeks gets pretty boring. And I speak from experience when I say you can only watch so many reruns of Friends and Burn Notice before you want to scream.
After surgery, when I came off whatever the doctors pumped into my system, I picked up some yarn and a crochet hook and attempted to go from straight lined projects to more complicated projects.
It was during that 8 weeks that AggieAmber Designs really began. It was then that I learned to crochet a beanie and from there I began to create the first collection of beanies that we sold.

The Baby Bunny Beanie was the first beanie that I made and sold. |
